Jewish survival has long confounded historians and social scientists.

How can a group, so small and so persecuted, outlast centuries of expulsion, exile, displacement, and destruction?

The real secret of Jewish survival is adaptation. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in music. Over the centuries, Jewish musicians have both borrowed from and influenced the music of the nations where they lived.

Our concert will trace Jewish immigration to the Americas in song, showing how melodies and rhythms encountered on new shores found their way into music composed for texts essential to Jewish life. This echoes a bigger story. In one way or another, we have all come out of Egypt.
